Dear church family,

The church council has decided to cancel all activities through April 1st. This was a very difficult decision, and one that some may disagree with. It was a consideration of Romans 13 that settled the issue for me, and I invite you to consider the same.

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good.” -Romans 13:1-4

My quick summary of the above verses is this: God has insituted rulers for our good and we ought to be subject to them. Also, on Monday, the president advised against “gathering in groups of more than 10 people.” So it is not out of fear of a virus, or fear of the government that we make this decision, but out of fear of God and a desire to follow his Word even when it is contrary to what we may feel is right, or prudent, or reasonable. My encouragement to you is to follow these guidelines as families and individuals as well.

The good news is that much of church life happens outside of Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. It happens between families and individuals–spiritual brothers and sisters loving each other, praying for each other, and meeting each other’s needs. Worship services are cancelled, but being the church has not been cancelled. Pray for one another. Call, email, and text one another. Spend time with one another too but take necessary precautions, especially if you have frequent contact with an at-risk individual.

I am working to find ways to leverage technology in our favor. Details about that will be coming. I am not sure if messages will be pre-recorded, or live streamed, but thanks to technology, I will find a way to at least perform the ministry of the Word.
